If you walk round the River Anllóns Estuary on an autumn evening, you'll witness a stunning image: thousands of birds taking off at once like a great cloud.
The intertidal space of the Anllóns Estuary – which covers 1154 ha – is a protected SCI (Site of Community Importance), part of the Costa da Morte Nature 2000 Network and a SPA (Special Protection Area for Birds).
Migratory birds from America reach Os Cagallóns Island. Some species can fly up to 11,000 km without resting!
Follow the Camino da Ribeira route (PR-G 148).
Once you've arrived at the bird observatory next to the "Xuncal pequeno" (Small Reed Bed) and the path for the A Insua Cove dune system, you'll find a lovely place to make a short stop and have a go at trying to identify the Kentish Plover, several species of ducks, Eurasian Curlews, cormorants or a peculiar endangered plant with a bird's name – at least in Galician – the "paxarillos amarelos" ("little yellow birds"), known as "toadflax" in English .
Don't forget your binoculars!
